Headquarters: Bethesda, MD
Annual Sales: $28 million
Units: 6
Key Personnel:
• Jeff and Barbara Black, cofounders
• Jon Linck, director of operations, partner
• Jenn Larkin, partner
• Mallory Buford, partner
SINGLE CONCEPTS:
• Black Market Bistro (a bistro at a Victorian-style post office in Maryland’s Garrett Park)
• Black’s Bar & Kitchen (refined modern American cuisine with an emphasis on seafood in Bethesda)
• BlackSalt Fish Market & Restaurant (an upscale seafood restaurant and fish market in Washington DC)
• Republic (a casual yet refined neighborhood bistro)
• Pearl Drive Oyster Palace (a seafood house with a touch of southern hospitality)
• Upstairs, Black Jack (a stylish bar offering craft beverages)
WHY IT’S COOL:
A few years back, Jeff and Barbara Black cleaned up at Washington DC’s annual RAMMY Awards, winning the Restaurateur of the Year Award, the Upscale Casual Restaurant Award for BlackSalt and the Hottest Bar Scene Award for Black Jack. This is a couple who knows how to run restaurants and can cook with the best of them. But the growth of this company has been squarely placed on the shoulders of Jon Linck, their director of operations, who has been pushing the enterprise forward. Expect more great projects from a group that now has the proper balance to grow.
