Winner: Short Rib Grilled Cheese

Restaurant: Cannery Row Brewing Company, Monterey, CA

Sandwich creator: Chef Dan Furey

Inspiration: “Hunger!”

Key ingredients: Three-hour braised short ribs, balsamic caramelized red onions, oven-roasted tomatoes, provolone, goat cheese, arugula and toasted sour dough bread

Why it’s special: The balsamic and peppery arugula gives this sandwich a delicious kick.

Price: $12.95

Food cost: 25 percent

What the judges said: The folks at Cannery Row call this a grilled cheese sandwich and we could have put it in the Grilled Cheese Sandwich category. But despite its best efforts, the goat cheese and provolone sit in the backseat while the short rib has a firm hand on the wheel. Those ingredients alone would have made the sandwich dandy, but riding shotgun are bracing onions, tomatoes and arugula, which send this sandwich into overdrive, leaving others in the dust.
