Everyone knows how difficult it is to run a restaurant. Imagine how taxing it must be to run multiple restaurants, each with its own personality. Clearly, there are no slouches among those who run companies with multiple restaurant concepts. This breed of entrepreneur has piqued our interest at RH, so we set out to spotlight the coolest, most influential multiconcept companies in the country. And by that we mean companies that crank out one cool concept after another and rake in the dough doing it.

With the help of Technomic and its list of the Top 200 Leading Multiconcept Operators, we examined the smaller players in the game—the ones who are creating, in our opinion, the most exciting restaurant concepts that others can’t wait to copy. Everybody already knows what the bigger players are doing, such as Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants ($500 million-plus), Wolfgang Puck Companies ($250-$500 million) and Patina Restaurant Group ($100-$250 million), which have all become conglomerates.

So, when we say we’re spotlighting the smaller multiconcept players, we’re talking about companies with annual sales of $100 million or less, according to Technomic. Most of those we profiled fall well below that level. When you take a look at our list, you’ll recognize many of the restaurants that fall under the umbrella of these hotshot players because you’ve likely been to many of them and, dare we say, stolen ideas from them (we’re not judging).
