Restaurant: Culinary Dropout, Phoenix

Creator: Mat Snapp

Inspiration: “I’ve been wanting to name a cocktail this for a while. It’s based off dueling, and how you would say, ‘Then it will be pistols, at dawn.’ Dueling, pistols: Bourbon. That made me think of Mexico; enter Ancho Reyes, a liqueur full of tradition.”

Key Ingredients: Bourbon, Ancho Reyes, ginger, agave syrup, splash of Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $11

What the Judges Said: What a beautiful drink, like blood darkening the sand on a hot Arizona morning. The one-two punch of the chile from the Ancho Reyes and the secondary heat from the ginger play nicely with the sweet bourbon and agave, and the red wine gives it all a little extra soul.
