Getting a new restaurant concept open is one challenge. It’s news that can generate media attention.

But a second location for a restaurant concept has a very different set of challenges. In many cases, No. 2 is a better, more-improved version of the first. Or it can be the ultimate test of whether a restaurant is viable for growth — proof of concept. Yet second locations typically don’t enjoy the same boost of public interest.

So here are five restaurants that are opening — or recently opened — a second location, indicating plans for growth. Some are gung-ho with future plans for more. Others are taking it one unit at a time, but are worth watching.
