Closures during the coronavirus pandemic were expected but as small business loans come in as part of the stimulus package, there appears to be light at the end of a very dark and winding tunnel for some.

More than 3 million restaurant industry jobs have been lost since March 1 according to a survey by the National Restaurant Association and 7 out of 10 restaurant operators have laid off employees. 10% of the American workforce has filed unemployment claims as of April 9.

The NRA estimates that 15% of the nation’s restaurants have or will be closed for good within the next two weeks.

In California, it’s estimated that 30% of the state’s restaurants could permanently close because of the crisis, according to the California Restaurant Association.

In this installment, closures range from a 36-year-old fine dining institution in New York City, to an iconic Los Angeles diner.
