As the season for charitable giving approaches, more and more restaurants that prioritize giving back are opening around the country.

Combining the culinary structure of a traditional restaurant with the charitable roots of a nonprofit organization, these concepts are designed to help feed, fight for and make a difference in communities across America.

“Food is something that unites us, but in a lot of ways restaurants separate us,” said Valerie Erwin, general manager of Philadelphia’s EAT Café, which stands for Everyone at the Table. “There’s an urge for restaurants to be more inclusive — for different kinds of people to have that experience. Restaurants that are more accessible give more people the opportunity to relax for a little while and have someone else cook for them, something they might not have otherwise been able to do.”

From “pay what you can” eateries that give quality food access to the needy, to a restaurant that provides refugees with job training, here are eight nonprofit, activist, or charity-minded restaurants that are making a difference.
