A small promo has paid big dividends for Buttercup Grill & Bar.

One of the five-unit chain’s locations is across from the Walnut Creek, CA, traffic court, so during the month of May the restaurant has been offering an Innocent Until Proven Hungry deal.

Anyone found not guilty that day can enjoy a complimentary lunch entrée (value up to $10) as a reward. To be eligible the bargain, the customer needs to have documents from the court appearance. The deal is good on the court date only, and only for dining in.

The free lunch did exactly what a promotion is supposed to do—promoted the restaurant, thanks to coverage by two local news shows and several area newspapers.
