best-logo-square_43.jpgThis year’s Best Sandwiches prove that chefs around the country continue to push the boundaries of the hand-held favorite. See all the winners >>

Winner: The Savage

Restaurant: The Steamie Weenie, Henderson, Nev.

Units: 1

Creator: Chef Bob Remington

Price: $6.25

Food cost: $1.56

Ingredients: Bacon-ale sausage, bleu cheese crumbles, caramelized onions, and house-made mustard and buttermilk ranch.

What makes it special: While toying around with the bacon-ale sausage, Remington said he started thinking of flavors that pair well with bacon. “I’ve always loved both bleu cheese and ranch with bacon, and I’ve always loved caramelized onions with bleu cheese,” he said. The mustard adds a touch of acidity to balance the richness of the other flavors. The Big Fork brand Bacon-Ale Sausage used is preservative-free, antibiotic-free, nitrite-free, gluten-free. And the bun is locally made.

What others are saying: The Savage is a new menu addition for summer, but The Steamie Weenie’s eclectic offerings are winning fans on Yelp. Tara M. of Henderson said, “The dogs … best in the West!”
