Know your clientele. There are times when families actively look for a place to bring the kids. There are places where restaurants signal, "Bring the kids, but we expect them to have their best manners on," or expect parents to adapt the regular menu to the kids' tastes (i.e. no hot dog on the menu.) Then again, I admit that I avoid restaurants where I know there will be a lot of families and kids -- it gets noisy, even when the children are well-behaved (read: parents do their jobs.)
Bob, thank you! The research you shared above complements the research I've been doing with parents since 2007. Not every restaurant has to be family-friendly and there are certainly plenty of examples of restaurants that aren't without having to publicly claim a ban. In all the marketing I've studied or executed, I've yet to see an approach where alienating consumers when they are young makes them fans of your brand when they are influencers or even decision makers, and wallet holders.
Please. When youths become adults they support that logic because they are now adults. Society doesn't like the upfront message of "no kids" but they get it. Just like bars don't allow people under 21, restaurants can do the same based on the business they want. Let the chain restaurants handle the families.
